The main ChatGPT free version limitations are on tools and models, not on chatting. OpenAI says Free users have unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards, while file uploads, image generation, voice, data analysis and other tools have separate usage limits. Free runs on GPT-5.6 Luna, has a smaller context window than paid plans, and leaves out features such as scheduled tasks and GPT-5.6 Sol.

Below is what the Free plan includes, where it stops, and what Go and Plus add. For the condensed numbers, see our ChatGPT Free limits listing.

What ChatGPT Free can do

According to OpenAI’s Free tier FAQ, a Free account can:

  • Search the web for up-to-date information
  • Analyze data and extract insights
  • Upload images and files in prompts
  • Discover and use GPTs made by others
  • Create images
  • Use Library with 500 MB of storage

The pricing page also lists Projects, shared projects, Study mode, the built-in browser, plugins and Skills (beta) for Free. Voice is included too.

The default model is GPT-5.6 Luna. OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 article says Free and Go users can pick Think for harder questions, and Think also uses Luna. On mobile it sits in the + menu; on the web it is still rolling out, per the FAQ.

Where the free version stops

Tool limits

The everyday chat is unlimited, but each heavier tool has its own cap. OpenAI lists data analysis, file and image uploads, and image creation as tools that “can have usage limits separate from the main chat limit”. The pricing page marks file uploads, data analysis, vision, image generation, memory and deep research as Limited on Free. OpenAI does not publish numbers for these caps; ChatGPT tells you when you hit one and shows the reset time in the app.

Models

Free does not include GPT-5.6 Sol or the Pro models. The GPT-5.6 help article is explicit: “Free and Go users do not have access to GPT-5.6 Sol.” Logged-out users don’t get Sol either.

Context window

The pricing page gives Free a 27K-token context window for GPT Instant, with an input maximum of about 12 pages of text. Go and Plus get 54K tokens and about 40 pages. For reasoning, Free is listed as “Varies”, while Go and Plus get 256K tokens (about 320 pages). In practice, long documents and long chats run out of room much sooner on Free. Our token counter helps you check how long a text is before you paste it.

Features missing on Free

The pricing table lists these as not available on the Free plan:

  • Scheduled tasks
  • Voice with video
  • Image generation with Thinking
  • Interactive tables and charts
  • Developer mode (beta)
  • ChatGPT record mode

ChatGPT Work and Codex are marked as limited, with Work only in the desktop app. Response times are “Limited on bandwidth & availability”, compared with “Fast” on Plus.

Custom GPTs and ads

You can use existing GPTs, but you can’t build new ones. OpenAI says new GPT creation and publishing are not available on personal accounts, including Free, Go, Plus and Pro. Ads may also appear on Free in certain countries.

ChatGPT Go keeps Luna but raises the tool caps. OpenAI’s Go article says it includes “higher limits for eligible features such as image generation, file uploads, and data analysis”, a larger context window, and voice mode with the same limits as Free. Go has no legacy models and no GPT-5.6 Sol. Prices and caps are in our ChatGPT Go listing.

ChatGPT Plus is the first plan with GPT-5.6 Sol. It includes Medium and High reasoning, but not Extra High or the Pro models. Plus also adds interactive tables and charts, image generation with Thinking and full deep research. See ChatGPT Plus limits.

What to do when you hit a Free limit

  1. Read the in-app notice. ChatGPT shows which tool is paused and when the limit resets.
  2. Keep chatting in text. A tool limit does not stop everyday chats.
  3. Wait for the reset if the task can wait. OpenAI Support can’t reset limits for you.
  4. Upgrade if you need the tool now. OpenAI says your usage resets when you upgrade to Plus, Pro or Business.

If ChatGPT stops answering altogether, the cause is probably not a plan limit. Check ChatGPT’s live status and our guide to the error in message stream.
