ChatGPT Free costs nothing and gives unlimited everyday text chats, according to OpenAI’s Free tier FAQ, “subject to abuse-prevention safeguards”. File uploads, image generation, voice, data analysis and other tools have their own, separate limits, and ChatGPT tells you when you reach one. OpenAI does not publish fixed numbers for those caps; its pricing page lists them as “Limited”.
The default model on Free is GPT-5.6 Luna, which also powers the Think option for harder questions. GPT-5.6 Sol and the Pro models are not included. If you hit a limit and upgrade to Plus, Pro or Business, OpenAI says your usage resets at the moment of the upgrade.
