A seamless coloring book pattern needs two things at once: repeatable edges and clear shapes that remain easy to color. Midjourney can help build the source tile, but the repeat still needs a visual seam check before print or digital use.

On this page

Start with a seamless pattern prompt

rounded seashells, small starfish and simple wave shapes, seamless coloring book pattern, bold uniform black outlines, medium-size closed areas, balanced spacing, white background, no overlap, no shading, no gray, no color, no words --tile --ar 1:1 --s 30

Midjourney lists --tile in its current parameter documentation. The parameter asks for a repeating tile. It does not guarantee that every edge, line or enclosed area will join cleanly, so inspect the result as a grid before using it.

Build the prompt in five parts

Use this order:

[small set of motifs], seamless coloring book pattern,
[line style], [shape size], [spacing and background],
[exclusions] --tile --ar 1:1 --s [value]

The first phrase controls what repeats. The next phrases describe a printable drawing rather than a textured illustration. Parameters stay at the end.

Midjourney’s Prompt Basics recommends short, specific descriptions and says numbers can reduce ambiguity. That matters in pattern work. “Three leaf shapes” gives the model a clearer inventory than “many botanical elements.”

Five pattern templates

Botanical repeat

three fern leaves, two small flowers and rounded seed pods, seamless botanical coloring book pattern, smooth black contour lines, clear enclosed sections, even spacing, white paper background, no solid black fills, no gray, no color, no text --tile --ar 1:1 --s 25

Keep the motif list short. A crowded inventory creates tiny gaps that are hard to color and harder to clean up.

Geometric pattern

interlocking rounded diamonds and circles, seamless geometric coloring book pattern, thick consistent black outlines, large closed shapes, equal spacing, white background, no texture, no shadows, no gray, no color, no lettering --tile --ar 1:1 --s 15

Geometric prompts benefit from a low stylize value because the intended structure matters more than decorative interpretation.

Ocean pattern

small whales, bubbles and curved wave marks, seamless ocean coloring book pattern, bold clean black outlines, broad closed areas, balanced repeat, plain white background, no realistic texture, no shading, no color, no words --tile --ar 1:1 --s 25

“Balanced repeat” describes the layout. It does not prove the tile is technically seamless. Test it.

Cozy objects pattern

tea cups, open books and small reading lamps, seamless cozy coloring book pattern, simple black contour drawing, medium-size closed shapes, generous white space, no people, no cross-hatching, no gray, no color, no text --tile --ar 1:1 --s 30

Object counts can help if one motif dominates. Try “three tea cups, two books and one lamp” when the first result feels uneven.

Children’s activity pattern

friendly toy robots, stars and simple gears, seamless children’s coloring book pattern, very thick smooth black outlines, large open shapes, minimal interior detail, white background, no brand characters, no shading, no color, no letters --tile --ar 1:1 --s 15

Use fictional subjects and generic objects. Avoid real people, protected characters and logos.

Keep the shapes colorable

“Line art” by itself can produce sketch marks, gray washes or fine texture. Name the physical properties the page needs:

  • bold or uniform contour lines;
  • closed areas;
  • broad spaces for coloring;
  • white background;
  • no hatching, shading or gradients.

Positive instructions do most of the work. Midjourney’s No parameter can remove unwanted elements, but a prompt made only of exclusions gives the model little direction.

If the pattern is too dense, reduce the motif list before adding more negative phrases. One or two large motif families usually repeat more cleanly than a catalogue of unrelated objects.

Choose stylization deliberately

Midjourney’s Stylize guide describes --s as a balance between prompt following and the model’s artistic interpretation. The current documented range is 0–1000, with 100 as the default.

For a coloring pattern, compare a few low values such as --s 15, --s 25 and --s 40. These are editorial starting points, not settings prescribed by Midjourney. Lower values can keep the pattern more literal. Higher values may add decorative detail that narrows the coloring areas.

Change one variable at a time. If you alter the motifs, line style and stylize value together, you cannot tell which change improved or damaged the repeat.

When to try Raw

The current Midjourney version documentation says Raw is available with current versions and reduces automatic styling. Add --raw after the base prompt is already clear:

rounded mushrooms, small leaves and acorns, seamless coloring book pattern, bold black outlines, clear closed areas, even white space, no shading, no gray, no color --tile --ar 1:1 --s 25 --raw

Compare the regular and Raw outputs. Raw is an option, not an automatic fix for broken seams.

Test the tile as a grid

A single square can look fine while its opposite edges fail when repeated. Check it in a 3-by-3 grid:

  1. place the same tile nine times without gaps;
  2. inspect the vertical and horizontal joins;
  3. look for lines that stop, double or create tiny trapped areas;
  4. check whether one motif forms an obvious stripe;
  5. print a small proof at the intended scale.

Do not hide a bad seam by cropping the outer edge. The same mismatch will reappear inside a repeated sheet.

Generated line art may also contain open contours or awkward overlaps. Correct those manually before calling the page print-ready.

Pattern tile versus finished page

A tile is source artwork for a repeat. A finished coloring page may need margins, a border and a page-specific crop. Keep those steps separate.

Use --ar 1:1 for the tile because a square is easy to repeat. After checking the repeat, arrange it inside a portrait or landscape document with safe margins. Midjourney’s aspect ratio controls the generated frame; it does not set the final paper size or print resolution.

For a single centered scene rather than a repeat, remove --tile and start from our Midjourney coloring book prompt templates and the Midjourney aspect ratio guide. The Midjourney parameters cheat sheet explains where parameters belong.
