A good Midjourney coloring book prompt names the subject, line style, page composition and intended audience. Keep the scene uncluttered, ask for black outlines on a plain white background, and choose a print-like ratio. The templates below are starting points, not tested output guarantees.

A prompt structure for coloring pages
Midjourney’s Prompt Basics guide recommends short, clear phrases and specific numbers when quantity matters. For a coloring page, put the drawing instructions in this order:
[subject and quantity], [activity or pose], [line-art medium],
[page composition], [line quality], [background] [parameters]
A compact example is:
One friendly sea turtle swimming above three rounded coral shapes,
children's coloring book line art, centered full-page composition,
bold clean black outlines, large enclosed spaces, plain white background
--ar 85:110 --s 50 --no gray, gradients, shading
This wording tells Midjourney what should be visible before it lists the format. “Large enclosed spaces” is useful for a young child’s page. For a more detailed page, replace it with a precise pattern or setting instead of adding a long stack of decorative adjectives.
The final parameters belong at the end of the prompt. Our Midjourney parameters cheat sheet lists the current formats and ranges.
Simple coloring book prompts for children
These original templates avoid named characters, real people and brands. Replace the bracketed details with your own subject.
One animal with large shapes
One cheerful [animal] standing beside two large flowers,
preschool coloring book line art, centered composition,
thick smooth black outlines, large enclosed spaces,
plain white background --ar 85:110 --s 40 --no gray, gradients, shading
Keep the object count small. Midjourney’s prompt guide says a specific number is clearer than a vague plural, so “two flowers” gives the model less room to add a crowded garden.
Friendly vehicle page
One rounded [vehicle] on a simple road with three puffy clouds,
children's coloring page, front three-quarter view,
bold black contour lines, simple geometric shapes,
wide open white background --ar 85:110 --s 50 --no color, gray, gradients, shadows
Use “rounded” or “boxy” only when the shape matters. Do not ask the image to reproduce a real vehicle model or logo.
Letter-and-object practice page
One large uppercase letter [LETTER] beside one [object beginning with that letter],
early-learning coloring worksheet, balanced centered layout,
bold black outlines, empty white interior shapes,
plain white background --ar 85:110 --s 25 --no color, gray, gradients, shadows
Generated lettering needs a manual check. Confirm the letter before printing, and add exact educational text in a layout tool when accuracy matters.
Detailed pages for older children and adults
More detail does not require a longer story. Name one visual system that can repeat across the page.
Botanical page
A full-page arrangement of [flower] blossoms, leaves and curling stems,
botanical coloring book line art, balanced border composition,
fine clean black ink lines, distinct enclosed petals and leaves,
white paper background --ar 85:110 --s 80 --no color, gray, gradients, shadows
Geometric animal page
One [animal] portrait built from symmetrical geometric sections,
adult coloring book line art, centered front view,
crisp black outlines, repeating triangles and curved bands,
plain white background --ar 85:110 --s 70 --no color, gray, gradients, shadows
Architectural street page
A narrow street with five small [architectural style] houses,
architectural coloring book line drawing, eye-level view,
clear black ink outlines, readable windows and doors,
uncluttered white sky --ar 85:110 --s 60 --no people, cars, color, gray, gradients
These are proposed prompts. Midjourney’s own documentation describes how text and parameters guide a generation, but it does not promise printable geometry or closed contours. Inspect every line before using a page.
Use positive descriptions first
The official prompt guide advises describing what you want. Put “black ink line art”, “plain white background” and “large enclosed spaces” in the main prompt. Use the --no parameter only for elements that keep appearing.
Midjourney’s No parameter page says every word after --no is read independently. This works well for a list of separate exclusions:
--no color, gray, gradients, shadows
Avoid phrases whose words change meaning when separated. The documentation uses --no modern clothing as a warning: the system reads “modern” and “clothing” separately. When a positive phrase can solve the problem, prefer it.
Choose a page ratio
Midjourney starts with a square image. Its Aspect Ratio guide says --ar takes whole numbers and belongs at the end of the prompt.
For a US Letter-shaped portrait, use:
--ar 85:110
For an A4-shaped portrait, use:
--ar 210:297
An aspect ratio sets shape, not final print dimensions. Exporting a page at 300 DPI and preparing bleed or margins are separate production steps. Midjourney also notes that some ratios can change slightly during upscaling, so check the final file before building a printable book.
Set stylize without overpromising control
The Stylize documentation gives the current range as 0 to 1000, with 100 as the default. Lower values follow the written prompt more literally; higher values give Midjourney more room to interpret it.
For clean line-page prompts, a low starting value such as --s 25 to --s 80 keeps the test close to the brief. That range is a practical starting point, not an official coloring-book preset and not a guarantee. Change one value at a time, then compare the line weight, composition and unwanted shading.
Midjourney’s Version page lists V8.2 as the current default. A saved prompt can look different under another version, so record the version with any page you approve.
Turn one prompt into a consistent set
Use one base brief and change only the subject:
One [SUBJECT] in a simple [SETTING],
children's coloring book line art, centered full-page composition,
bold clean black outlines, large enclosed spaces,
plain white background --ar 85:110 --s 50 --no gray, gradients, shading
Then make a written page list before generating:
- turtle above coral
- whale under three bubbles
- octopus beside two shells
- seahorse among four sea-grass leaves
The fixed structure makes your review more useful because subject and object count are the main changes. It does not lock character identity or line placement. If character consistency matters, use the appropriate reference workflow described in Midjourney’s documentation and check that you have the right to use every reference image.
For broader composition ideas, see our image prompt templates. If the page is meant to resemble a photograph before conversion to line art, start with the framing advice in photo prompts.
Pre-print checklist
Check each page rather than assuming the prompt handled production details:
- the requested subject and object count are present;
- outlines are continuous where an enclosed coloring area is needed;
- no unwanted gray fills, gradients or heavy shadows remain;
- hands, faces, wheels, petals and repeated patterns are structurally usable;
- letters and numbers are correct;
- the subject stays inside the safe page area;
- the file has enough resolution for its intended print size;
- no real logo, protected character or identifiable person’s likeness slipped into the image.
A generated page is a draft illustration. Clean it in a vector or raster editor and run a print proof before distributing it.
