ChatGPT Temporary Chat starts without personalization by default. OpenAI’s current FAQ also describes an optional personalized mode that can use existing memories, custom instructions and plugins, plus an option to save the conversation later. Choose the mode before starting and distinguish a temporary conversation from a saved regular chat.

Choose personalization at the start

According to OpenAI’s Temporary Chat FAQ, a non-personalized temporary chat does not use memory, custom instructions or plugins. A personalized temporary chat can reference those existing settings, but it does not create or update memories while the conversation remains temporary.

The personalization choice cannot be changed after the conversation begins. If you need a different mode, start a new temporary conversation with the intended setting. Account and workspace restrictions still take priority.

Behavior Non-personalized temporary chat Personalized temporary chat

Temporary does not mean instant deletion

OpenAI says temporary chats are not used to improve its models while they remain temporary. The FAQ also says a copy may be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes. Those statements describe different aspects of handling a conversation.

Temporary Chat is therefore a choice about conversation behavior and retention under the service’s rules. It should not be treated as an assurance that confidential information may be uploaded regardless of workplace policy or permission.

If a GPT action sends information to a third party, that recipient’s privacy policy applies to the data it receives. OpenAI’s FAQ warns that the third party may keep it longer than 30 days and use it for other purposes. Review the destination and the requested data before using such a feature.

Saving changes the conversation’s status

A useful temporary conversation can be saved to chat history. OpenAI says saving converts it to a regular chat. From that point, account-level personalization and model-improvement preferences apply.

That transition matters if you chose Temporary Chat to keep a discussion out of history or avoid using it for model improvement. Review the account settings before saving, rather than assuming the original temporary behavior continues.

For missing regular conversations, use the separate ChatGPT conversation recovery guide. An unsaved temporary conversation is a different situation from a regular conversation hidden in an archive or another workspace.

Start with a clear task

A non-personalized conversation needs any relevant preferences supplied within the conversation itself. For a simple editing task, an original template is:

Rewrite the text below for an English-speaking customer. Keep the meaning and factual uncertainty. Use short, connected paragraphs. Do not add names, figures or promises. Return the revised text only.

Text: [paste the text you have permission to share]

This template is an editorial example, not an OpenAI guarantee or a test result. Add only the context needed for the task. Use the prompting guides for other task-specific structures.
