ChatGPT missing conversations may still be searchable, archived or stored in another workspace or account. Check those locations and the service status first; chats that were actually deleted cannot be restored.

Search before assuming the chat is gone
Open Search in the ChatGPT sidebar. On the web, use Ctrl+K on Windows or Cmd+K on macOS.
Search for a distinctive phrase from the conversation rather than only its title. OpenAI says search can match words in chat titles and messages. If filters are available, select All or Chats and try more than one phrase.
An older conversation can disappear from the visible sidebar without being deleted. Search is the quickest way to separate “not shown here” from “not in the account”.
Check Archived Chats
Archiving removes a conversation from the regular sidebar but keeps it in the account. Archived conversations remain searchable.
To inspect them directly:
- Open Settings.
- Select Data controls.
- Open Archived chats or View archived chats.
- Choose Unarchive to return a conversation to regular history.
If the conversation is there, do not delete it while troubleshooting. Deletion is permanent from the user’s point of view.
Confirm the account and workspace
A chat belongs to the account and workspace where it was created. Check:
- the email address or sign-in method;
- the active personal or work workspace;
- whether the conversation was created in another browser profile;
- whether an organisation’s retention policy affects workspace content.
If you use email/password in one session and Google or Apple sign-in in another, verify that both routes resolve to the same account. A correct password does not help if you opened a different account.
Refresh the session and check service status
OpenAI’s troubleshooting guidance recommends refreshing the page or signing out and back in. Before repeating local fixes, check OpenAI Status for an active incident that could temporarily hide history.
If there is an incident, avoid deleting local app data or reorganising chats until service status returns to normal. A display problem during an incident does not prove the conversation was deleted.
For broader service checks, see ChatGPT not working: steps to find the cause.
Use a data export as a record check
OpenAI recommends requesting a data export from Settings → Data controls when conversations appear missing. The export can help confirm which chats are still stored with the account.
A data export is not a restore button. It is evidence about the account’s retained content. If the conversation is present in the export but still absent from the interface after service issues are resolved, that is useful detail for Support.
Know what cannot be recovered
OpenAI distinguishes archive from delete:
| Action | Sidebar | Search | Recovery |
|---|---|---|---|
| Older chat not currently shown | May be absent | Can appear | Open from search |
| Archived chat | Hidden from regular history | Can appear | Unarchive in Data controls |
| Deleted chat | Removed | Does not appear | Cannot be restored |
OpenAI says deleted chats are removed from the account view immediately and scheduled for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days, subject to stated security or legal exceptions. It also says deleted chats cannot be restored through the product or Support.
Do not follow a third-party “recovery” tool that asks for your ChatGPT password, session cookie or exported account archive. Those files can contain private conversation data.
A clean troubleshooting order
Use this order so each step answers a different question:
- Search for words from the chat.
- Change the result filter to All or Chats.
- Check Archived Chats.
- Confirm the active account and workspace.
- Refresh, then sign out and back in.
- Check the official status page.
- Request a data export.
- Contact Support with the account email, sign-in method, workspace and approximate date of the missing conversation.
This sequence cannot recover a deleted conversation, but it covers the cases where content is merely out of view, archived or attached to a different account context.
