The Claude doc-coauthoring skill’s SKILL.md tells Claude to offer it when you want to write documentation, a proposal, a technical spec, a decision doc or similar structured content, such as a PRD, design doc or RFC. Claude explains its three stages and asks whether you want the workflow or prefer to work freeform.
In Context Gathering, Claude asks what kind of document it is, who will read it, what it should achieve and whether there is a template. It then invites you to share everything you know, in any order, and follows up with 5 to 10 clarifying questions. In Refinement & Structure, Claude builds the document section by section: questions about the section, 5 to 20 brainstormed points, your choice of what to keep or cut, a draft and targeted edits. In Reader Testing, a fresh Claude with none of the conversation’s context answers the questions readers are likely to ask, so gaps and ambiguities show up before colleagues read the doc. In Claude Code, Claude can run this test itself with sub-agents; in the Claude apps, it gives you the questions to ask in a new conversation.
The skill is part of the example-skills plugin from Anthropic’s skills repository. In the Claude apps, example skills are turned on in Customize > Skills, with Code execution and file creation enabled (Use skills in Claude).
