ChatGPT voice limits now depend on the plan, the Voice option you use and where you start the conversation. OpenAI measures Live use in Chat over a rolling 24-hour period, so the allowance does not necessarily reset at midnight.
This guide uses OpenAI’s current Voice help page, checked on 18 October 2026. Voice allowances can change, and ChatGPT shows an in-product notice when you reach one.

ChatGPT Voice limits by plan
OpenAI currently lists these allowances for Live in Chat:
| Plan | Live allowance |
|---|---|
| Free | Limited GPT-Live-1.1 Quip access; the limit may change |
| Go | 3 hours with GPT-Live-1.1 Quip |
| Plus | 3 hours with GPT-Live-1.1 |
| Pro, $100/month | 15 hours with GPT-Live-1.1 |
| Pro, $200/month | Unlimited GPT-Live-1.1, subject to abuse guardrails |
| Business Standard | 3 hours, then 1.25 credits per minute |
| Business Premium | 15 hours, then 1.25 credits per minute |
| K-12 Teachers | 3 hours |
| Enterprise, Edu and Clinicians on credit pricing | 1.25 credits per minute |
| Enterprise on usage-based USD pricing | $0.05 per minute |
| Legacy Enterprise and Edu | 3 hours |
These numbers apply to Voice in Chat. OpenAI says Voice in Work on web and mobile follows the account’s Voice limits and billing, while Work tasks also count toward normal Work usage. Voice in the desktop app has a separate pricing and limits page.
If you are comparing the two Pro prices, our ChatGPT Pro $100 vs $200 vs $500 guide covers the broader plans. The table above is the Voice-specific part.
The rolling 24-hour window
A rolling window moves with your use. If you spend an hour at 3 p.m., that hour falls out of the 24-hour calculation at about 3 p.m. the next day. It is different from a reset at the start of a calendar day.
ChatGPT notifies you when you reach the limit. OpenAI does not publish a separate countdown formula on the help page, so the account notice is the practical source for your remaining access.
Live, Advanced and Standard are different
OpenAI describes three Voice options:
- Live is the natural back-and-forth option powered by GPT-Live-1.1 or GPT-Live-1.1 Quip, depending on the plan. It can use web search, memory, supported widgets, text, images and available connected apps. It does not support video or screen sharing.
- Advanced is the previous real-time Voice experience. Eligible mobile subscribers still use it for live video or screen sharing.
- Standard transcribes speech before generating a response, so the exchange works turn by turn.
The options visible in Settings → Voice can vary by plan, workspace settings, region, app version and parental controls. A missing option is not proof that the account is broken.
Video and screen sharing have separate limits
Live does not accept video or screen sharing. Those controls remain available to eligible subscribers in the iOS and Android apps when using Advanced.
OpenAI does not give one public number for every video or screen-sharing allowance on the Voice page. It says that when the separate limit is reached, you may still be able to continue the Voice conversation without starting another video or screen input.
That distinction matters: hitting a camera or screen-sharing cap does not always mean spoken Voice is finished.
Why a Voice conversation can end
A Voice conversation may stop because you reached:
- the plan’s Voice allowance;
- the maximum session length; or
- the chat’s context limit after a long conversation.
You can have one Voice conversation at a time. If a session ends, continue in text or start Voice again when access is available.
A background conversation can also end when you close it, force-close the app, lock the phone while sharing a screen in Advanced, or reach one of those limits.
What counts toward Voice use
OpenAI measures Live use in Chat across a rolling 24 hours. In Work, a spoken task follows the plan’s Voice billing and also consumes normal Work usage in the same way as a typed task.
Images attached to a Live chat follow the image allowances for the account. Live cannot currently find files in ChatGPT Library, although manual file attachment may be available. These are separate constraints, so a file or image limit can appear even when Voice time remains.
For general file caps, see ChatGPT file upload limits.
Data and transcripts
OpenAI says audio clips from Live and Advanced, and video clips from Advanced, are stored with the chat transcript for 30 days. Deleting the chat starts deletion of the associated clips within 30 days, subject to stated security, legal and safety exceptions. Archiving a chat does not delete those clips.
Audio and video clips are not used for training unless the user chooses to share them or enables the relevant audio or video data-control setting. Transcripts and other files may be used under the account’s plan and settings when model improvement is enabled.
