ChatGPT’s “There was a problem preparing your chat” message usually points to something in the browser blocking the page, not to a damaged conversation. OpenAI’s troubleshooting page says it usually happens when a browser extension or URL blocker interferes with loading the page. The practical fix is to isolate those layers before you delete anything or rewrite the prompt.

Docs checked: 25 October 2026. OpenAI can change the wording and its browser requirements, so recheck the source if the error starts appearing after a product update.

Start with a clean browser test

Open the same conversation in a private or incognito window. If it loads there, the account and conversation are probably fine; the difference is usually an extension, cached site data or a browser setting. OpenAI specifically recommends trying an incognito window or another browser for this error.

If the private window still fails, try a second browser on the same device. A working second browser narrows the problem to the first browser’s profile. A failure in both browsers makes network filtering or a service problem more plausible.

Disable blockers before general extensions

Turn off URL blockers and extensions that block scripts or modify page content first; OpenAI names these for this error. Reload the page after each change so you can identify the actual cause instead of disabling everything permanently.

Next, temporarily turn off unfamiliar or unused extensions, as OpenAI’s guidance suggests. If one of them turns out to be the cause and you do not recognise it, remove it, then restart the browser and test again.

Do not assume an ad blocker is harmless because ordinary pages still load. A rule that blocks one of the requests ChatGPT makes can break one stage of the app while leaving the interface visible.

Clear site data without wiping the whole browser

If extensions are not the cause, sign out of ChatGPT, clear the site data for ChatGPT and sign in again. Site-specific clearing is a more controlled test than deleting the entire browser history. It removes cached files and stored session data for the affected site while leaving unrelated logins alone.

OpenAI’s broader troubleshooting sequence also recommends a hard refresh (Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + R) and clearing cache and cookies. After clearing site data, close all ChatGPT tabs before opening a fresh one. Multiple old tabs can keep stale sessions active.

Rule out VPN and network filtering

Pause a VPN, secure DNS filter, proxy or corporate web filter, then reload. OpenAI lists turning off VPNs and secure DNS tools for related ChatGPT errors. If that fixes the problem, restore the security tool and look for a narrow allow-list rule instead of leaving protection disabled.

You can also compare two networks: for example, your normal Wi-Fi and a phone hotspot. A conversation that works on one network but not the other points to filtering or routing, not the prompt itself.

On a managed work or school device, do not bypass policy. Send the exact error, time, browser and affected URL to the administrator. The comparison tests above give them useful evidence without exposing the conversation text.

Check service status before deeper debugging

If the error appears in multiple browsers, private windows, devices and networks, check OpenAI’s status page. A service incident can make local troubleshooting pointless. Wait for recovery and test the existing conversation again; do not duplicate important work across several new chats unless you need a temporary workaround.

Collect useful evidence for support

If the problem persists, note the time and time zone, browser version, operating system, whether private mode worked, whether extensions were disabled, and whether another network changed the result. OpenAI asks users to contact support when the standard steps fail and to record a HAR file of the error, with browser console errors and timestamps, before contacting them.

A HAR file can contain request details and sensitive session data, so never post it publicly. Capture the smallest possible reproduction: open ChatGPT, reproduce the error once, stop recording, and send it only through the official support channel.

The key diagnostic order is simple: private window, second browser, blockers and extensions, site data, network comparison, service status, then support evidence. For other messages, such as “Something went wrong”, see the ChatGPT error guide.
