Match the wording on your screen to the table below. This guide separates interrupted replies, connection errors, failed downloads and pages that do not load, with links to dedicated guides for those symptoms.
Most of the meanings and steps here come from OpenAI’s Troubleshooting ChatGPT Error Messages article. OpenAI says these errors usually come from “network configuration, browser extensions, or transient server-side problems”, so the same few checks fix most of them.

The checks that fix most errors
Before looking up a specific message, run these. OpenAI repeats them across almost every error:
- Check status.openai.com. During an outage, wait.
- Refresh the page or start a new chat.
- Turn off VPNs, proxies and secure DNS tools such as Web Protect.
- Try an incognito window or another browser to rule out extensions and stale site data.
- Switch to another network or device.
Network and websocket errors
“A network error occurred” and “An error occurred while connecting to the websocket” share one cause. OpenAI says both messages “suggest that your device is unable to establish a reliable connection to our servers”. Its steps:
- Disable VPNs or proxy connections.
- Turn off Web Protect or other security filters.
- Try a different browser or incognito mode.
- Switch to a different network or device.
On a company network, OpenAI’s network recommendations ask IT teams to allowlist ChatGPT’s domains and to allow WebSocket traffic over TCP port 443 to wss://ws.chatgpt.com, without TLS inspection closing the connection early.
“There was a problem preparing your chat”
OpenAI says this usually happens “when a browser extension or URL blocker interferes with loading the page”. Its steps:
- Disable extensions that block scripts or modify page content.
- Temporarily turn off any unfamiliar or unused browser extensions.
- Open ChatGPT in an incognito window or a different browser.
“There was an error generating a response”
This is a failed response: ChatGPT could not produce an answer. OpenAI says it “may be a one-time error” and to click Regenerate. If it repeats:
- Restart your browser or device.
- Disable VPNs or proxy connections.
- Turn off Web Protect or other security filters.
- Try a different browser or incognito mode.
- Switch to a different network or device.
“We detect suspicious activity” / “Unusual Activity Detected”
OpenAI shows this when its systems see traffic “that may resemble automated or unusual behavior”. Its steps:
- Disable VPNs or proxies that might route your traffic through flagged IPs.
- Restart your browser or device.
- Use a private browsing window to start a fresh session.
- Make sure you are not sharing your ChatGPT account with other people; change your password and make sure your email is secure.
- If you are not using bots or automation tools, contact OpenAI to report it.
“Download failed” / “File Not Found”
This appears when you click a file link that ChatGPT generated. OpenAI’s steps:
- For a custom GPT, make sure Code Interpreter is enabled and that the GPT was updated after you ticked the box.
- Download recently generated files: OpenAI says files generated by ChatGPT “expire quickly”, so regenerate an old one.
- Disable VPNs or proxy connections.
- Keep the file under the 512 MB size limit.
Blank screen, frozen page or endless loading
When ChatGPT shows nothing or keeps loading with no error message, OpenAI’s steps are:
- Hard refresh the page (Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + R) or force reload the desktop app.
- Sign out of ChatGPT and sign back in.
- Clear site data or cookies for chat.openai.com.
- Disable extensions or content blockers.
- Open ChatGPT in an incognito window, a fresh browser profile or a different browser.
- Turn off VPNs, secure DNS or other security filters.
- Switch to a different network or device.
When to contact OpenAI Support
If an error persists across browsers, devices and networks, OpenAI asks you to record a HAR file while you reproduce it, collect browser console errors with timestamps, note the model and the conversation URL, and contact Support through help.openai.com.
