Since May 2026, the Gemini app uses compute-based usage limits instead of daily prompt counts. Google’s limits page says the limits factor in “the complexity of your prompt, the models and features you use, and the length of your chat”, and that your limit “refreshes every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit”. Without a Google AI plan you get “standard limits”.
Free users can use Gemini 3 Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro, with a 32K-token context window. Google warns that for users without a plan, compute-heavy features such as Deep Research “may be unavailable during periods of high demand”, and that their limits may be cut before paid users’ when capacity changes. Settings > Usage Limits shows where you stand.
